The continued development of these fields of research is secured through participation in international groups and projects, namely in those that lead to the use of existing and future facilities of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and of the European Space Agency (ESA). It is considered strategically important for CAUP to be optimally placed to contribute to large projects within ESA (preparation and exploitation of existing and future space missions) and ESO (use of existing and forthcoming facilities and the scientific driving of the development of the next generation of instrumentation) and also to other international initiatives. In order to consolidate the participation in major developments in instrumentation across the fields of research at CAUP, astronomers may also be hired with specific expertise in connection with Astronomical Instrumentation and Data Analysis. They should be able to provide the basis for more ambitious links to instrument development in partnerships with more technologically oriented units in Portugal and Europe. The contracts are aimed at researchers with a PhD and having a relevant scientific curriculum and publication record, with significant experience in their field of research. They will be expected to supervise research students and to propose and conduct new research projects and funding applications (national and international), as well as lead the participation of CAUP in relevant international initiatives in their field of research. A minimum of three years experience as a postdoc is preferred. Applications: The application, to be submitted by email, should include the following:
A short-list of candidates will be defined in the first stage of the evaluation based on the application submitted by email. The short-listed applicants will be required to present a brief seminar and attend an interview at CAUP for the second stage of the evaluation (planned dates are 19-20 October 2007). Following the second stage the contracts will be offered according to the ordering proposed by the selection committee. Further announcements on CAUP Opportunities can be found at our website.
