Mode identification from line profiles using the direct fitting technique

Although several techniques of mode identification from line profile variations are generally used, only two are capable of extracting the full pulsational information - the method of moments and the direct fitting method. Obtaining full pulsation information from the line profile variations is very important as it allows one to test the validity and statistical significance of the identification. Comparison of model profiles with the data is not possible unless this information is available. The method of moments is most effective for low spherical harmonic degrees. The direct fitting method has no restrictions, but can only be used when sufficient data are available to average out variations due to other modes within a given phase range. In the last few years I have applied the direct-fitting method to different types of stars pulsating in low and high spherical harmonic degrees, both single-mode and multi-mode. In this presentation I would like to discuss my experiences with this method which is generally used in combination with photometric mode identification techniques.
