A review is given of inflation as a theory for the origin of structure in the Universe. The mechanism for the generation of both density perturbations and gravitational waves by inflation is briefly described, and particular attention is given to the prospects of using measurements of microwave background anisotropies to constrain and exclude models of inflation.
