Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto
FCT Researcher (5 years)

Ref: CAUP2013-08UnI-CAPD

The Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) is going to open soon a call for research contracts. The positions are for 5 years. The net yearly income corresponds to the salary of an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, depending on the profile of the candidate. The selection is done by FCT. Each candidate will have to select a host institute in Portugal.

CAUP is the largest Astronomy research institute in Portugal, evaluated as "Excellent" by an international panel under the auspices of FCT. The objective of CAUP is to be an institute with internationally recognized front-line research and actively involved with the leading institutes in Europe on the areas identified as the focus of our research activity.

The ongoing research activities at CAUP (involving 37 researchers and 16 PhD students) are organized along broad lines of research, considered to be strategic for the long term development of CAUP. Candidates, whose contribution to the following topics is relevant, will be welcomed to have CAUP as the host institution:

- Origin and Evolution of Stars and Planets
  • Star Formation and Early Evolution
  • Planetary Systems
  • Stellar Populations and Evolution of Stars

- Galaxies and Observational Cosmology
  • Galaxies and Clusters
  • Structure Formation, Dark Energy and Fundamental Physics

- Scientific and Technical Development of Astronomical Instrumentation

The continued development of these fields of research is secured through participation in international groups and projects, namely in those that lead to the use of existing and future facilities of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and of the European Space Agency (ESA). It is considered strategically important for CAUP to be optimally placed to contribute to large projects within ESA (preparation and exploitation of existing and future space missions) and ESO (use of existing and forthcoming facilities and the scientific driving of the development of the next generation of instrumentation) and also to other international initiatives.

In order to consolidate the participation in major developments in instrumentation across the fields of research at CAUP, astronomers may also be considered with specific expertise in connection with Astronomical Instrumentation and Data Analysis. They should be able to provide the basis for more ambitious links to instrument development in partnerships with more technologically oriented units in Portugal and Europe.

CAUP welcomes pre-applications until 19 July. Each proposal will be reviewed on arrival, in a case by case approach, by the selection committee. Following a positive outcome of the pre-selection the candidate may proceed with the submission of her/his application to FCT, with CAUP as the host institution.

CAUP is open to negotiate with prospective candidates the terms under which it can be a host institution for the application.

All applications must follow the FCT regulations. Please note that these regulations may change for the 2013 call.
