Junior Researcher Fellowships

The Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP) invites applications for two junior researchers in the field of time-series analisys of stellar data and asteroseismology in general.

The financial support is provided whitin the European Network in Helio and Asteroseismology (HELAS 2006-2010) with funds from the European Commission (FP6-2004-Infrastructures-5-026138). The positions are up to 18 months (to finish by the 31st of March 2010). The monthly allowance will be 745 euros (students with a B.Sc. or a Licenciatura) or 980 euros (students with a Masters).

CAUP is a young and active research institute situated at the main campus of the University of Porto. It is the largest astrophysics institute in the country, ranked Excellent in this area by the science foundation international evaluation. The current staff includes 25 researchers and over 30 postgraduate students (Ph.D. students and two Master Programs). As a CAUP member the junior researcher will have access to all facilities, including also travel money for participating in HELAS events and staff exchange.

The activities on Helio and Astero-seismology at CAUP cover the seismic study of solar-type and moderate-mass stars, from the pre- main sequence up to more advanced stages of evolution. Study of stars with planets are also a research topic pursue in CAUP. Both theoretical and observational work is carried out by the group. The junior researcher will be actively involved in the HELAS activities on developing and testing tools for the characterisation of stellar time-series data. The selection will be based on the qualifications (degrees) of the applicant and any other relevant experience. PhD students from other institutes are encouraged to apply to spend an extended period working with the members of the team on Origin and Evolution of Stars and Planets at CAUP.

Applicants should forward (preferably, by email):
