The Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP) opens a call for 2 Advanced Postdoctoral Researchers. The positions are for 5 years starting before the end of 2008. The net yearly income is above 42 000 euros (before taxes) corresponding to the salary of an Assistant Professor.

CAUP is the largest Astronomy research institute in Portugal, evaluated as Excellent by an international panel under the auspices of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). The Strategic Development Plan of CAUP is built around: scientific excellence; public outreach; national networking; internationalization; financial stability. The objective of CAUP is to be an institute with internationally recognized front-line research and to be actively involved with the leading institutes in Europe on the areas identified as the focus of its research activity.

Profile
The contracts are aimed at researchers with expertise in any of the areas currently represented at the institute, namely

• Origin and Evolution of Stars and Planets (Star Formation and Early Evolution, Planetary Systems, Stellar Evolution);
• Galaxies and the Evolution of the Universe (Physical Properties of Galaxies, Galaxy Formation and Evolution, Observational Cosmology).
• Astronomical Instrumentation (associated with any of the above scientific topics).

The consolidation of the existing teams through the integration of human resources with complementary expertise is the main objective of the selection procedure. For applications of similar quality, preference will be given to applicants in the fields of Galaxies (Physical Properties of Galaxies and Galaxy Formation and Evolution).

In order to consolidate the participation in major developments in instrumentation across the fields of research, astronomers are also sought with specific expertise in connection with Astronomical Instrumentation and Data Analysis. They should be able to provide the basis for more ambitious links to instrument development in partnerships with more technologically oriented units in Portugal and Europe.

The applicants should have a relevant scientific curriculum and publication record and have significant experience in their field of research. They will be expected to supervise research students and to propose and conduct new research projects and funding applications (national and international), as well as lead the participation in relevant international initiatives in their field of research. Three years experience as a postdoc is preferred, although exceptions may be considered. The positions will be filled, following the proposal by the Selection Committee and final decision by FCT.

• Complete list of publications;
• Description of research experience and plans (up to 3 pages), including summary of expertise, self-evaluation and proposed work plan. The applicant should indicate any experience in supervision of research students, coordination of research teams and funding applications, as well as the participation in international programmes, initiatives and working groups);
• Names and contact details (position, email, address) of three referees that will be available to provide information about the candidate (these will be contacted, if necessary, by the Selection Committee).

The candidates may be required to present a seminar (up to 30 minutes) and participate in an interview.
