Research Fellowship in the field of Astero and Helio-Seismology

The Centro de Astrofisica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP) opens a call for one Research Fellowship to work at the Instituto de Astrofisica e Ciencias do Espaco (IA), at the Universidade do Porto, in the thematic line on Towards a Comprehensive Study of Stars. The position is offered with funds provided by the project 'Exploitation of Space Data for Innovative Helio- and Asteroseismology (SPACEINN)' with financial support provided by the European Commission. The position will start in October 2015, for nine months.

The successful candidate is expected to pursue research in the development of asteroseismic diagnostic tools and their application to real data. Preference will be given to MSc or PhD students working on some of the topics proposed by the SPACEINN team members in IA and associated to the deliverables. Other topics associated with IA contribution to SPACEINN may also be considered. The fellow will be involved in the other activities and deliverables of SPACEIIN to be implemented by IA, namely within Work-Package 6.

According to the rules of the National Science Foundation FCT, the monthly income is 745,00 euro (tax free).

Application
The application, to be submitted by email, should include the following:
  • Cover letter with a brief description of the candidate's experience and motivation;
  • Short Curriculum Vitae (up to 4 pages) including a list of previous research experience, description of relevant competencies/experience and possible relevant scientific publications (up to 1 additional page);
  • Name and contact details (position, email, address) of two referees, available to provide information about the candidate (to be contacted if considered necessary).

Selection Criteria
The applicant must have completed an undergraduate degree in astronomy or a related field (physics, mathematics, etc). Only applications from candidates having an adequate background in Astronomy, Physics, Geophysics, Mathematics, or other relevant domains, will be considered.
A short-list of candidates will be defined in the first stage of the evaluation based on the submitted application. The short-listed applicants will be required to attend an interview for the second stage of the evaluation. If necessary the interview will be done by video- or tele-conference. The contracts will then be offered according to the ordering proposed by the selection committee.
